Laws' delight as Owls buoyed by double loan deal

BRIAN Laws today welcomed the double boost provided by loan defenders Tony McMahon and Lewis Buxton.

The Owls boss has brought back McMahon from Middlesbrough for a third and final month and extended Buxton's loan from Stoke.

Middlesbrough recalled McMahon after he was sent off at Barnsley and began a three-match ban.

But Boro have decided that he can return to Hillsborough and he should be available for the next five games, starting with the Hillsborough clash with Doncaster on Saturday.

Buxton was signed initially on a one-month, but Laws always planned to extend that to three months, and agreement from Stoke means that the versatile defender will be with the Owls until January 17.

Ninety-three days is the maximum period allowed for emergency loans. McMahon has already completed two-thirds of his Hillsborough stay as he first arrived in August.

Laws said: "I'm pleased ... Tony's return gives us a bit more strength in depth defensively.

"He and Lewis have both done cracking jobs for us.

"I've been really pleased with both of them.

"Tony is a right-back with Premier League experience; Lewis is extremely versatile and is able to play anywhere across the back four."

Buxton has already had stints at centre-half and right-back for the Owls and helped them through a period of injury problems. He played at full-back in last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace - his fourth appearance for the club.

Laws added: "Both have fitted in really well."

With first McMahon then Buxton arriving, it has made it possible for Laws to avoid rushing Frankie Simek back into the side after his long-term injury. It was only after McMahon had been sent off at Barnsley that Simek was brought on to the bench for two games.
