Jeffers back to fight for Owls place

FRANCIS Jeffers was today set to step up his claim for a Wednesday place by playing for the reserves at Stocks-bridge.

His chances of facing Coventry at Hillsborough on Saturday could also be influenced by a scan on Akpo Sodje.

The club are awaiting the results of scans on Sodje, Wade Small and Etienne Esajas.

Although the injuries have blotted a previously improving fitness scenario, the Owls were still set to field some experienced players in the reserves this afternoon (2pm) against Grimsby at Stocksbridge in a League Cup group game.

Jimmy Smith returns after a four-match ban, received after he was sent off at Birming-ham.

The side was also set to include Deon Burton, Frankie Simek and Lewis Buxton.

Sodje went off in last Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Derby with a niggle at the back of his knee; Small (hamstring) and Esajas (Achilles tendon) were both ruled out of the game, along with Peter Gilbert (Achilles), who is expected to be fit for the Coventry match.

Chief executive Kaven Walker refused to comment on yesterday's monthly board meeting.

It is understood that a wide range of issues was discussed.

The Owls would have to decide whether to release a statement, something that is not usually done after routine meetings.

Issues up for discussion are thought to have included the contracts of Brian Laws and several players, suggestions from Wednesdayite, and the takeover saga.

Defender Liam McMenamin is in the Northern Ireland Under 21 squad for tonight's match against Scotland in Hamilton. He made an Under 21 breakthrough earlier this year though he is only 19.

Jermaine Johnson faces a crucial World Cup qualifier for Jamaica against Canada in Kingston tomorrow, with his country needing to win to keep alive their hopes of reaching the 2010 finals.
