Intrepid sponsor out to scale new peaks with Owls

WEDNESDAY players are not the only ones preparing for action after their return to pre-season training. New sponsor David Richards will be taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge on the weekend of September 5, which will raise money for the Children's Hospital as part of his company's backing of the Owls and the hospital.

"I'll be doing the challenge and I hope others will do the same," said Richards, chief executive of Californian software giants WANdisco.

He is inviting local businesses to join WANdisco and a team from Wednesday in scaling the three highest peaks in Yorkshire.

Richards is an Owls fan who was born at Nether Edge Hospital and grew up in Crosspool before studying at Huddersfield University, moving to London and then leaving 12 years ago to build a successful career in America. He has started and sold three companies so is now on his fourth one

But signing WANdisco up to the Owls' Platinum Partners sponsorship package is not an act of sentiment for the 38-year-old.

"If you're a fan of a club and the opportunity arises to help, you'd look at doing it. But it has to be right for my business as well," he said.

"I wouldn't do anything to jeopardise the brand of my company. I could have done this (with Wednesday) at any time in the last seven to 10 years, but it was impossible; the club's brand wasn't right. Now it is.

"Our involvement now is specifically due to the club's link-up with the Children's Hospital."

For details on WANdisco's Three Peaks Challenge contact Patrick Cull on 0114 321 6248 or e-mail Patrick.cull@wandisco.com for an application form.

The deal has been welcomed by Owls chief Lee Strafford and hospital charity director David Vernon-Edwards.
