I'm happy here, says Laws as talks begin

WEDNESDAY'S board look set to move to ease Hillsborough uncertainty over the contracts of Brian Laws and nine of his senior players which all expire next summer.

Boss Laws has revealed that the board are to discuss his and players' contracts at their next meeting - and that he wants to stay despite speculation that he could be a target for Nottingham Forest.

The Owls boss, "flattered" by being linked to his old club, insists: "I want to take this club (Wednesday) to the Premier League - we need some resources to do it, as well.

"Since I have been here the club have started to show a bit more consistency in supporting the manager more.

"There have been no knee-jerk reactions, and they have been supporting the manager when things haven't gone well.

"It's a great club. I like working with the players. The fans are supportive. Who wouldn't want to be here?"

Laws is hoping that new investment can be secured to boost the Owls' resources.

He sympathises with Colin Calderwood over speculation about the Forest manager's future.

"I've got every respect for the guy. When you're in a job you don't want to be hearing about people taking over your position," he said.

"Nottingham Forest have a manager. I'm manager of Sheffield Wednesday, a job I enjoy immensely."

The players whose contracts run out next summer are Leon Clarke, Deon Burton, Richard Hinds, Tommy Spurr, Peter Gilbert, Wade Small, Kenny Lunt, Richard Wood and Steve Watson.

Laws waits for late fitness checks on Mark Beevers (hip and illness) and James O'Connor (hamstring) before settling on his line-up to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park tomorrow.
