Goals from Jacques Maghoma, Gary Madine and Atdhe Nuhiu saw Wednesday stroll into the second round of the Capital One Cup.
The Owls were dominant against Notts County in front of almost 13,000 at Hillsborough.
Maghoma and Madine – on his first start for the Owls in almost 17 months – netted inside the first nine minutes to set the stage for a first half of total control for the hosts.
And Nuhiu atoned for a number of missed chances with a header on 64 minutes to cement the Owls’ control.
Notts County were left shell-shocked by the early barrage and struggled to contain confident Wednesday until close to half time.
Such was the one-sided nature of the contest, the Magpies made a triple substitution shortly after the break.
Stuart Gray made three changes from Saturday’s win at Brighton with Madine, Chris Kirkland and Jose Semedo selected in place of Kieran Lee, Sam Hutchinson and Keiren Westwood. New signing Stevie May sat out due a suspension incurred during his time in Scotland last season.
Maghoma curled home a fine strike to give Wednesday the lead after just 90 seconds.
County could only half clear after good build-up play from the Owls and Maghoma pounced to finish well and get the hosts off to the best possible start.
And then Madine pounced on poor County defending to sweetly volley home from a brilliant Chris Maguire cross.
Nuhiu produced a 64th minute header to cement a comfortable lead for the Owls, pouncing to head past Roy Carroll
It could have been even better for Wednesday in the first half with a number of chances going begging.
A Joe Mattock cross from the left landed on the crossbar with County keeper Carroll stranded.
Nuhiu missed a hat trick of headers during the first half, putting a Maghoma cross onto the roof of the net before nodding wide from a Maguire free kick.
But the best of the three was the latter as he powered a headed effort wide with the goal gaping after Maghoma drew out Carroll and crossed.
Giles Coke almost made it three early in the second half after receiving a pass from Semedo but drilled wide.
However Wednesday did not have to wait long for a third when Nuhiu made up for those missed opportunities.
The striker saw an effort blocked after superbly bringing down a cross from Maguire who produced a fine stop from Carroll soon after.
