Dropping Chris Kirkland must go down as one of the boldest and perhaps most controversial decisions of Dave Jones’ reign.
It really does show that no matter how high-profile a player is, he is not guaranteed a place.
Kirkland would agree with that view but I am sure that he will not have found it palatable to have been left out of the Owls’ league side for the first time.
Jones has felt for the last two or three months that the keeper has not been matching his standards of last season, when he was outstanding.
The ex-England keeper has always accepted that competition for places is healthy and that he had to work hard to try to stay in the side.
If he had been making glaring errors then his exit from the team would have been easier to understand.
