Don't cash in on JJ, urges Sheffield Wednesday winger

GARY Teale is urging Sheffield Wednesday not to cash in on mercurial winger Jermaine Johnson.

Championship outfit Nottingham Forest recently had an offer, understood to be around 350,000, rejected for the Jamaican international.

Owls boss Alan Irvine told The Star last night that Forest's bid was "miles away" from meeting the club's valuation of Johnson.

The 30-year-old is out of contract at end of the 2010/11 season and summer signing Teale is hopeful Wednesday will hang on to the gifted attacker.

"Having played against him a number of times, I know JJ is a handful," he said. "JJ is a potential matchwinner on his day and we need players of that ilk because teams are going to come and make it difficult for us to break them down.

"He is one of those players who can do something out of nothing. I think he could make a big impact in League One. Hopefully we can keep him as you want to hold on to your best players. If we don't keep him, I'm sure other players in the squad could step up and make a difference."

Irvine has praised Johnson's attitude and application in training since Forest's bid, saying: "Full marks to him as he has not mentioned it once.

"He has not batted an eyelid and I think he should be praised for the way he has conducted himself.

The Scot added: "JJ is definitely not a player we want to sell. He knows what I think of him and how important he is to us so I'm hopeful he is going to have a fantastic season."
