DARREN Purse is convinced Sheffield Wednesday have the two best strikers in League One in Clinton Morrison and Neil Mellor.
Both Morrison and Mellor registered in the club's 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory at Bristol City last weekend, taking their goal returns to eight and 13 respectively this season. The duo are expected to lead Wednesday's attack when they return to Hillsborough for the first time in over a month against managerless Charlton on Saturday.
Purse, the club's captain, told The Star: "They are Championship strikers; it is as simple as that. Clinton has played the majority of his career in the top two divisions and so has Neil. It just shows the quality we have got in the squad.
"If you look down the years, most teams who have gone up have had two players who have scored 20-plus goals and both Clinton and Neil are on the way to doing that. They are working really well in tandem and hopefully can keep it going."
Purse said he was delighted by the manner of the Owls' win at Bristol and believes they "thoroughly deserved" to reach the fourth round after a "quality" second-half display.
"In the first half, it was backs to the wall; we rode our luck at times," he said. "We scored some great goals after the break and thoroughly deserved to go through. Our priority is to get promotion but it's nice to go on a cup run - it breeds confidence throughout the squad."
Manager Alan Irvine has conceded the club could end their interest in Motherwell defender Mark Reynolds, 23. He admitted: "It's not something that looks as if it is going to happen." Motherwell boss Stuart McCall claims they have turned down an Owls' bid.
Hereford United won 1-0 at Wycombe Wanderers to secure an FA Cup fourth round tie at Wednesday on January 29. The winner came from Frenchman Mathieu Manset.
