Burnley still keen on Owls ace Tudgay

BURNLEY manager Owen Coyle has spoken for the first time of his admiration for Marcus Tudgay and revealed that the Clarets would still be interested if the Owls changed their minds about selling the striker.

Wednesday spurned an approach by Burnley for Tudgay and insist that he is not for sale.

Manager Brian Laws has described Burnley's verbal offer as derogatory and has accused the Clarets and Tudgay's agent of unsettling him after he had agreed on a new three-year deal.

Coyle made it clear he did not want to get into a row with Wednesday and said: "I'm not going to get involved in what somebody said or didn't say; the bottom line is I think we made a very fair offer in the market place and it was turned down.

"Our chairman (Barry Kilby] made a verbal offer to the Sheffield Wednesday chairman for Marcus Tudgay last year for 1.5m. He's a terrific player and I understand they don't want to lose him.

"With a year left on his contract we thought we made a very fair offer, and my chairman said to me that offer's still there if Wednesday were ever to take us up on it.

"There's no doubt he's a terrific player who'd be a tremendous acquisition to what we're doing."

Tudgay has a year left on his existing Hillsborough contract; the Owls too regard him as a big asset and want to keep him.

Jermaine Johnson played for 75 minutes as Jamaica lost 1-0 to Canada in Los Angeles yesterday in a Gold Cup group game. He was replaced by Barnsley's Jamal Campbell-Ryce.
