Blades may ask for Owls' help in red card row
SHEFFIELD United could enlist the support of arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday if they attempt to overturn Matthew Kilgallon's controversial sending-off during yesterday's Steel City derby at Hillsborough.
The United defender received a straight red card for a high challenge on Sean McAllister after 28 minutes and faces the prospect of a three-match ban.
Referee Mike Dean's decision astonished United and afterwards boss Kevin Black well hinted they could ask for the matter to be reviewed before tomorrow's Champion-ship fixture with Southampton.
But Blackwell, who criticised other aspects of the Wirral official's performance, expressed fears Kilgallon could be punished further if he was seen to be making a "frivolous appeal".
Given the fact that Owls boss Brian Laws also sympathised with his predicament, such a scenario seems unlikely should United pursue the matter.
Indeed, they could include Laws' comments - "we were close to it and it looked a yellow card" - in any submission to the authorities.
"Do we hope to appeal?" Blackwell said. "Maybe. But I keep hearing the word 'frivolous' being used these days and then there's a danger people get an extra game (ban).
"That was a Steel City derby. It was a fanny's tackle. I wouldn't like to see Dean referee one of the old derbies.
"It wasn't just the sending-off, there were other blatant fouls that went unpunished.
"If that's a sending-off then we may as well all pack-up and go home. Brian Howard has an eye nearly hanging out of his socket.
"It seems you can maliciously wound somebody and get away with it.
"But if you have a go at referees, then you get fined."
