Alan Biggs at Large: West is best for the Owls... but if Stuart Gray can get £2m for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, he should consider selling

A rapid takeover (unlikely) would, of course, change everything but forgive my caution on that subject. Let it not obscure the here and now.

This is January and if Sheffield Wednesday can get £2m for Keiren Westwood I think they should take it. There. Said it.It might not be a popular view and disagreement is inevitable. Who wants to lose their best player?

But you haven’t heard the proviso yet. ONLY if the Owls get a good price and commit to improving the team with the proceeds. Otherwise, how can you improve it by selling arguably the best goalkeeper in the Championship this season?

Then again, understudy Chris Kirkland ought to get into many or most most Championship sides. And how else can Stuart Gray address the lack of goals somehow underpinned by a superb defensive record (albeit Westwood-inspired)?

Isn’t it refreshing, though, that the Owls suddenly have a number of potentially saleable assets, including centre back Tom Lees and back-in-the-goals Atdhe Nuhiu? When was the last time?

For me, a keeper, if he’s covered, is the most expendable. No bidders yet apparently but Liverpool have been linked and I’ve heard strong whispers about Everton. As Sky’s ex Wolves keeper Matt Murray was first to say here back in early November, you’d have to expect interest.

Without an influx of cash, Gray can only import loans. Main wish: if something does happen, let it be in time to act.
