DAVE Jones dubbed the first-half performance at Oldham as the worst spell he has seen from his Wednesday side.
The manager was “spitting feathers” and even the second-half fightback that brought a 4-2 win in the Capital One Cup did little to appease his anger. Jones gave the team a rocket at half time when they trailed 2-0. “For 45 minutes we got our backsides kicked,” he said. “One or two thought it was going to be a stroll.
“If we had come out strong in the first half like we did in the second, we’d have made life easier for ourselves. It was uncharacteristic in the first half. I was so surprised; we’d worked hard in pre-season and never let ourselves down.”
Strikers Gary Madine and Chris Maguire, who both went off in the first half, were injured, he said, but added they were both coming off anyway.
Jones added: “Although we came out with some credit, it’s the first half I remember more than the second.”
