GOALS by Mike Jones and sub Chris O’Grady gave the Owls a 2-0 win against Reading in Albufeira, Portugal.
Jones shot his first goal for the club seconds before half time, and O’Grady rounded off an impressive performance by the team again Premier League opposition by adding the second goal in the 89th minute.
Jones picked up possession 20 yards out, took a step forward and struck an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.
Dave Jones fielded a much-changed line-up after the game against Sporting Lisbon on Sunday, with Stephen Bywater returning in goal.
Bywater stopped Reading from taking a 33rd minute lead when he touched a corner on to the bar, with the ball going for another corner.
Earlier Jermaine Johnson had a shot saved, and the Owls made a good start, with Johnson making a series of runs.
Jones volleyed wide, and it was half an hour before Reading started to get into the game.
Michail Antonio did not start the game but Reading manager Brian McDermott was planning to field a different side for the second half and duly brought the Owls target into the fray.
Nejc Pecnik could have made it 2-0 to the Owls after breaking through the middle but he chipped wide.
A cross by Antonio was flicked on by Reading’s new Russian striker, Pavel Pogrebynak, but former Wednesday target and ex-Rotherham forward Adam Le Fondre failed to cash in.
Then a splendid block on the line by Bywater from another Royals sub, Jobi McAnuff, stopped Reading drawing level.
O’Grady slammed home the loose ball after the keeper got a hand to a shot by Marlon Harewood.
