Legendary Sheffield United and England goalkeeper Alan Hodgkinson tells his boy’s own story in a new autobiography, Between The Sticks.
Rotherham born ‘Hodgy’ was signed from Worksop Town, made 674 appearances for the Blades, was in the England squad at two World Cups, and coached Scotland and Manchester United.
Hodgkinson is credited with bringing the great Peter Schmeichel to Manchester United and he mentored David Seaman, Rotherham’s other famous goalkeeping son, who went on to achieve fame with Arsenal and England.
He has just retired after 60-years of involvement with the game.
England’s 1966 World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks presented him with The Star’s Derek Dooley Lifetime Achievement Award at our 2013 Football Awards.
Now a special Evening with Alan Hodgkinson MBE, including pie and peas, will help to launch his book, published Harper Collins, at Bramall Lane, on Thursday, May 9, at 7.30pm.
Tickets, including food, a drink and a signed book, are £45 each, or £30 without the book. Tables of 10 cost £400. Call 0871 9951889.
Rory Scarfe, HarperSport editorial director, said: “Alan’s story reads like football fantasy: a working-class lad who signed a club contract at 15 in return for his first suit and went on to play for England and then coach at Manchester United.”
We have a pair of tickets to be won to Thursday’s book launch evening, plus a signed copy of Between The Sticks. Two runners-up get a signed book each.
