SHEFFIELD United’s Danny Wilson will be unveiled as League One’s Manager of the Month for December later today.
Wilson, who last night claimed the South Yorkshire club are still in a strong position to capture Glasgow Rangers midfielder John Fleck, beat off competition from Stevenage’s Graham Westley, Dean Smith of Walsall and Leyton Orient’s Russell Slade to lift the award.
United - who are also interested in Fleck’s teammate, Kyle Hutton - won all five of their games over the festive period, scoring 13 goals and conceding only four in the process.
Blackpool, who could loan striker Billy Clarke back to Bramall Lane during the transfer window, appeared to be in pole position to sign Fleck until the end of the season after enquiring about the Scotland under-21 international’s availability earlier this week.
However, acknowledging that Fleck is unlikely to leave Ibrox until Rangers’ injury problems are resolved, Wilson insisted the fact that United came close to acquiring him earlier in the season could put them in the box seat.
Hutton and Fleck both agreed to join Wilson’s squad on a temporary basis in August only for red tape to scupper the deal.
“They agreed to come here back then and expressed an intention to play for us,” said Wilson. “That desire has not changed.
“We can’t do anything until their parent club says so because they are contracted elsewhere.
“They are players we have identified and we will wait but we can’t wait for ever. There might come a time when we have to move on and we are looking at others.
Wilson added: “Both lads were ready to come down to England last time.”
