Why Wilson’s the main man for Lowton

Getting the best from his men: Blades boss Danny Wilson

DANNY Wilson’s man-management skills are one of the main reasons why Sheffield United figure prominently in the League One promotion shake-up, according to talented defender Matthew Lowton.

Blades boss Wilson had overseen eight successive victories at Bramall Lane in all competitions before the FA Cup tie with Birmingham City.

Despite watching his team fail to score and lose for the second match in a row, Wilson’s men remain handily placed to challenge for the automatic promotion berths in the third tier of English football. They are just one point behind Huddersfield Town, who are in second position, and boast a game in hand on their Yorkshire neighbours.

Lowton is in now doubt that Wilson’s ability to coax the best out of players has been instrumental in United’s march up the table.

The right-back told The Star: “Danny encourages everyone and says if we make mistakes that’s human.

“It is good to have a manager who is not on your back if you make mistakes. He is full of praise and stuff and that makes it easier to go out and express yourself.”

Under the tutelage of Wilson, Lowton has established himself as a first-team regular at United.

The Chesterfield-born player is enjoying working under Wilson and believes the former Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley chief is bringing the best out of him.

“Danny has been fantastic with me,” said Lowton, who is believed to be a transfer target for Ipswich Town, “He has helped me out no end.

“I feel I have played my best football over the last couple of weeks because there has been no pressure on me. Danny has helped me express myself on the ball and told me to go out there with no fear and show everyone what I can do. He has made it easier for me to relax and play my football.”

Danny Philliskirk has extended his stay at United. The young striker has agreed a new one-year deal and is contracted to the club until 2013.

I don't see anything wrong in Lowton saying what he did, because he's certainly played very well under Wilson. But he still may go if the right offer comes in. The cynics may say he's preparing the ground for a move
