When you see your team line up for what looks like an audacious attempt at a free kick routine, your heart sinks.

It may work once in a blue moon but more often than not, someone isn’t quite switched on and the ball either ends up in someone’s garden outisde the ground, or it rolls slowly and simply into the path of a goalkeeper who’s been left wondering how he’s ended up with it after the entire opposition team ran around in a circle like some sort of circus troupe.

The latter certainly wasn’t the case for Sheffield United against Scunthorpe United on Saturday as their routine - apparently put together by assistant manager Alan Knill in training this week - worked perfectly.

A few players stood over the ball, there’s a dummy run, some shielding from Matt Done and a square pass from Mark Duffy. Jack O’Connell then makes a run, plays a first time ball into the path of Chris Basham who’s sneaked in at the back post amid the confusion. He then takes a touch and prods it home. Glorious.

The only problem is, they have to come up with another one now... they never work more than once.
