Nigel Adkins has vehemently denied being handed a promotion ultimatum by Sheffield United’s owners before taking charge at Bramall Lane.

Adkins was this evening under mounting pressure after leading the League One club, regarded as title favourites following his appointment 11 months ago, to its lowest finish in over 30 years.

With reports in Turkey claiming former Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor chief Kazim Ersun Yanal has been approached about the possibility of becoming United’s ninth permanent manager since 2007, Adkins told The Star: “There was no time frame on it (reaching the Championship). I signed a three year contract. My objective is to get there and to give us an opportunity to keep moving on. I’m still confident we can do it, yes.”

Adkins was speaking after a 2-0 defeat by Scunthorpe saw United, whose co-chairman Jim Phipps announced his resignation this evening, end the season five places and eight points behind the play-off positions.

“I very much want to (continue),” Adkins added. “I signed a contract and I’ve always honoured everything like that I’ve been given. I’ll have discussions with the owners, which is right and proper, because we all want to achieve. The ownership will have their meetings and, all being well, we’ll put ourselves in a position to work together through next season to achieve what we want to achieve.”

Phipps, meanwhile, confirmed his departure via Facebook, writing: “What I have not been able to give you, and what we all desire, I wish for you with all my heart; serial promotions and a return to the Premiere (sic) League.”
