U’s have to be on your guard, insists Wilson

Warning: Well need to be at our best, says Danny Wilson

Warning: Well need to be at our best, says Danny Wilson

SHEFFIELD United manager Danny Wilson is under no illusions of the threat Colchester United will pose in their own backyard.

Fresh from capturing Will Hoskins on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion until the end of the season, Wilson wants a three point haul at the Essex club this weekend to keep the pressure on their top two rivals.

He is acutely aware the U’s, who are in 13th position in League One, will be looking to avenge their comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Bramall Lane in mid-September and told his players not to underestimate the quality they possess in their ranks.

“We will need to be at our very best,” admitted Wilson. “Teams in this division are ready to trip you up. It’s very tight towards the top of the table.

“One game, whatever the result, won’t decide a season. But we want to keep the pressure on those around us as much as possible.

“We have done well so far and we want to maintain that. But I know the lads here are professional. They’ll give everything.”

Against all odds, United managed to hang on to their top performers during the January transfer window despite needing to reduce the size of their wage bill.

Indeed, it was a case of one in and one out on transfer deadline day, with Hoskins coming in from the Seagulls on a temporary basis to beef up their striking options while Erik Tonne was farmed out on loan to York City to further his footballing education.

Wilson has spoken of his delight at recruiting former Rotherham United forward Hoskins, who represented England at Under-18, 19 and 20 level, saying: “Will is a real team player, he has great movement and has scored a lot of goals at this level.

“He is hungry for goals and we all look forward to him scoring for us in what will be an important run in.”

Hoskins may be given his debut at Colchester on Saturday. He could get the nod to partner top-scorer Ched Evans in attack, meaning Richard Cresswell could drop to the bench. James Beattie is still suspended.

# 23 and 24 - Its probably a mixture of factors. We're paying high end championship wages for low end championshipL1 players. That will have put some off, as would the fact that the players themselves will probably not want to take a pay cut. Just look how quiet the transfer window has been in general though, teams are not speculating. Its not clear whether the fact that no one was sold is because McCabe is showing confidence in the team, whether any offers were just too cheeky or whether there were no offers! Ether way i'm happy.

I dont buy that. This means NOBODY will buy them unless they take a wage cut. This is all speculation really, top line is we have kept together who we wanted which suits me just fine.

#12 & #20 - Only reason McCabe hasn't sold anyone is that nobody in the Championship can afford their wages, so they wouldn't go. The only folks who could afford to pay them are Premiership clubs, and there are no players of Premiership quality in our squad, so that didn't happen. Beattie and Hoskins will get paid very low wages, so they cost next to nowt....

Back to Post 12 comment: I have never sla....i maen had a go at KM. On BBC 606 i stood up for him against all takers. NOt blinding loyalty but just trying to balance the books. So what if he snatched off Spurs hand and sold the Walkers, so what if hes started to take a bit of money back? The only questionable acts for me he has done is bought into overseas clubs giving us the smoke screen that the Baldes will see some youth come from these clubs. We didnt believe it then and still await the first arrival. The other was selling BT to Stoke when we were pushing for promotion. He has bankroled us for years so hes allowed to take something back. Ok so he took Wet Spam to the courts, hes just looking out for his own club the same as any chairman would or shoulf do. Another of the same mould is Dave Whelan who backed KM to the hilt. Fair enough, the reason we got releagted out of the prem is that we wernt good enough but what WH did was truely underhand. Hes clearly gambling this year as hes seen that DW has got a good thing going. KM gambled with wages to get us into the Prem and when we came down, major league cost cutting was needed, the after effects we still need to tackle. Should we not get promoted this year, all thoise players we thought may leave in Jan will go (lead by Eavns whos out of contract in the summer) so this year is really make or break as i think if we dont go up this season, we will have to adjust to the 3 division for a good few years. Well Deputy - I guess I didn't have my horlicks tablets to calm me down - sorry. Still I have to repeat - the Star is a PATHETIC excuse for a 'newspaper' - one half decent Journo - Tommo - the rest, what a joke, and they don't ever have the b-alls to post an explanation or apology - or even admit that many of the postings on here give them fuel to be able to carry out their 'jobs' as so called Journos (save for Tommo). So, again.................................................................................................Is that it Star? Your 'Pending Moderation' is absolutely pathetic - PATHETIC! 'The Star' as a 'newspaper' and it's Journos (save Tommo) is a pathetic excuse. Postings on this web-site are all too frequently populated with sexual innuendo and offensive comments - and what do you do? Nowt! PATHETIC! The when one tries to use a word such as 'sl-ag' - the posting gets 'PM'ed' - PATHETIC! Try looking up the word 'sl-ag' in your Collins Gem Dictionary - then perhaps you'll will admit to being PATHETIC!
