SHEFFIELD United are negotiating with an unnamed Championship club about visiting Bramall Lane for a high-profile friendly next month after talks aimed at hosting Real Zaragoza broke down, The Star understands.
The Spaniards, who beat Real Madrid in La Liga last term, had been expected to face Danny Wilson’s side on the final weekend of July.
However United, who hope to unveil their completed pre-season schedule later this week, are believed to have pulled-out of those discussions for as yet unspecified reasons on Thursday.
For the third year running, the South Yorkshire club’s preparations for the new campaign will begin in earnest with a week long training camp in Malta.
Wilson’s squad, who fly out to the Mediterannean on July 14, face Hibernians and another local outfit before returning to England for a meeting with Doncaster Rovers at Bramall Lane on July 26.
But the identity of their second opponents on Malta will only be finalised when the preliminary rounds of the Europa League are finalised shortly.
Before flying to the island, United play away fixtures at Sheffield FC (July 9) and Worksop Town (July 12).
Their reserves have confirmed games against Alfreton (July 27) and Stocksbridge (Aug 2).
