Defeat by Notts County might have stalled progress last weekend but Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, is satisfied with the evolution of his team.
Events at Meadow Lane, where the visitors were accused of allowing numerous promising situations to go to waste during a hard-fought League One contest, revealed areas where they must improve to drag themselves clear of trouble.
But, scratch beneath the surface of that result, and Clough insists sure and steady progress is being made.
Most notably in improving the lines of communication across a squad whose cameraderie and confidence had been destroyed by its wretched form at the start of the campaign.
“There are partnerships developing out there now, which is pleasing,” Clough said. “You always need those in your team.”
