SHEFFIELD United manager Danny Wilson has compiled a shortlist of transfer targets as the Bramall Lane club attempts to re-enter the loan market, it emerged last night.
Although it remains unclear whether United will be able to complete a deal before next weekend’s Steel City derby, the development suggests Wilson has received permission from the board of directors to bolster his squad.
With Daniel Bogdanovic and Jordan Slew severing their ties with Bramall Lane last month, a striker is known to be Wilson’s number one priority.
United are also set to hold talks with Reading about the possibility of retaining Marcus Williams’s services.
The left-back, who has made three appearances since completing a month-long move, is scheduled to return to Berkshire before the arrival of Gary Megson’s side.
Wilson has refused to reveal the identities of those players under consideration but has made no secret of the fact that he would like to inject some pace into his depleted attack.
Following Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success over Rotherham, the former Northern Ireland international scotched talk of a move for Danny Webber, who spent more than four years at United before joining Portsmouth in 2009.
Webber’s representative is believed to have contacted a member of Wilson’s staff expressing his desire to return to Bramall Lane. However, United are understood to be pursuing other options.
Despite acknowledging the need for savings after being relegated last season, United’s plc chairman Kevin McCabe released the funding required to sign midfielder Kevin McDonald on a free transfer earlier this term.
With today’s League One fixture at Preston North End postponed until October 19, Wilson’s side have been forced to reschedule their training schedule ahead of their meeting with Wednesday.
The draw for the JP Trophy Northern Area quarter-finals takes place this morning.
