SHEFFIELD Wednesday won the bragging rights of the development squads with victory over Sheffield United at Hillsborough.

Both teams fielded strong squads with Gary Madine and Rodri starting for Wednesday and Chris Porter and Danny Philliskirk for United.

Wednesday, with Rodri to the fore, began well and went ahead through an excellent strike from Madine. Last season’s top scorer for the first team latched onto a pass from Danny Mayor to beat Blades keeper George Willis.

Rodri then had a chance but could only win a corner, from which Madine headed over.

United had a penalty appeal turned down with Wednesday shading possession and creating the better opportunities.

The Owls doubled their advantage before half time. Madine slammed the ball home after a strong run and cross by Caolan Lavery.

The Blades looked livlier after the break. A good strike by Shaun Miller was dealt with by Wednesday goalkeeper Arron Jameson.

It wasn’t long though before United pulled one back through Philliskirk.

The Blades joy didn’t last long as Barcelona B loan player Rodri restored the Owls two goal cushion with a neat finish from close in after good play by Mayor.

And it could have been 4-1 after Madine was upended in the box after being put through by 15-year-old Jack Stobbs. However, the striker opted to allow Lavery to take the kick which he blazed over the bar.

United pulled one back again in the game’s dying moments through Philliskirk to give the visitors hope but there was no way back.

A crowd of 1,230 watched the match at Hillsborough.
