David Weir has vowed not to shy away from taking the tough decisions required to transform Sheffield United’s season, writes James Shield.
The South Yorkshire club enter Saturday’s meeting with Preston North End in the League One relegation zone and without a win since the opening fixture of the campaign.
Pledging to tackle the issues which have prevented United from fulfilling their potential, Weir said: “I’m the type of person who will confront things.
“Football is all about winning and I want to be a winning coach.”
Weir chaired what a source described as a “full, frank but constructive” dressing room inquest following last weekend’s defeat by Carlisle.
Despite the recent acquisition of creative talents such as Florent Cuvelier and Jose Baxter, United have struggled to perform in front of goal with Graham Kavanagh’s side becoming the fourth team to shut them out in five outings.
Weir predicted Febian Brandy’s return from suspension can help reinvigorate his misfiring attack - “He’s unpredictable. The type of player who can bring the crowd to its feet” - but warned against regarding the expected arrival of a new centre-forward as a miracle cure.
“One loan isn’t going to solve all of our problems,” he said. “But we’ve got the people and the quality here to do it. I’ve got no doubts about that.
“We do need a lift so that’s what we’ll be looking to do. Without a doubt.”
Weir confirmed he is scrutinising “every aspect” of United’s preparations and game-plan before returning from Brunton Park but dismissed suggestions they have become too focused on simply retaining rather than exploiting possession.
“We don’t ask for a set number of passes. We don’t ask for the ball to be kept for a set amount of time,” he said.
“The only thing that matters, ultimately in football, is winning matches.”
“It (Carlisle) was a low point,” Weir added. “I’m the manager and I take responsibility. But the answer isn’t walking away.
“The answer is confronting things and going head-on. That’s the type of person I’ve always been and that’s what I’ll be doing now.”
