Former Republic of Ireland international Lee Carsley has this afternoon joined Sheffield United’s backroom team, writes Dom Howson.

Carlsey, a former teammate of United manager David Weir’s at Everton, will take up the role of ‘Assistant Manager - Technical’ at Bramall Lane.

He made over 500 appearances for Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, Coventry City, Birmingham City and Everton in his career and won 40 caps for his country.

The 39-year-old has recently worked in a coaching capacity at Coventry, fulfilling a number of roles, including development coach, first team coach and interim manager when Mark Robins left the Sky Blues to join Huddersfield Town in February.

Weir said: “Lee is someone I trust immensely and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to recruit him. His experience at this level will prove invaluable to us.”
