Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins has described Terry Kennedy as “a warrior” after predicting he can become an influential figure at Bramall Lane this term, writes James Shield.

The centre-half made his first competitive appearance for five months against Hartlepool in midweek and produced a typically combative display which left Adkins, who took charge of the League One club in June, delighted.

“Terry is a warrior,” he said. “And, not only that, he’s a warrior with a great attitude too.

“It was good for him and I was pleased to see him out there too because, the same as Flynny (Ryan Flynn), it’s the first time I’ve seen them in that environment. Terry showed what he was all about, the type of qualities he’s got, and what he can bring to the table.”

United, who were forced to postpone today’s League One fixture with Colchester due to international call-ups, won the JP Trophy tie at Victoria Park 4-3 on penalties and will discover their next opponents during this morning’s second round draw.

Kennedy could feature when Adkins’ squad resumes its bid for Championship football against Bury in seven days time although the 50-year-old has vowed not to overload a player whose progress has been punctuated by a series of knee complaints.

“You’ve got to feel for Terry because of the injuries that he’s had,” Adkins said. “We’re very mindful of that and, as even he would admit himself, we’ve got to look after him properly.

“But you’ve seen what he’s capable of doing. There was one moment when he went straight through one of his own players (Jay McEveley) to win a header and I thought that was brilliant. It summed him up perfectly. It shows his spirit, desire and determination for this football club.”
