Talks between Sheffield United and Derby County aimed at delivering Paul Coutts and Kieron Freeman to Bramall Lane were progressing last night after Nigel Clough, the League One club’s manager, admitted he hopes to make a breakthrough in the transfer market before Saturday’s game at MK Dons.

But Clough, who joined United after leaving the iPro Stadium in 2013, warned next week’s cup ties against Tottenham Hotspur and Preston North End could take precedence over brokering a deal for the duo should they fail to arrive before his team depart for Buckinghamshire.

United travel to London for the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final with Spurs on Wednesday before facing Simon Grayson’s side in the FA Cup fourth round three days later.

Although he refused to confirm the presence of Coutts and Freeman on his wanted-list, Clough said: “We’re trying to get something done in time for MK Dons but, with the fixtures coming up afterwards, we might decide to wait if nothing happens.”
