Chris Porter, the Sheffield United centre-forward, has revealed the secrets behind his team mates’ improved form, writes James Shield.

Porter, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s crucial League One fixture at Notts County, credited Nigel Clough’s management style for transforming the visitors’ fortunes following their wretched start to the campaign.

United travel to Meadow Lane having been beaten just once in 10 outings and Porter, a member of the side which knocked Aston Villa out of the FA Cup last weekend, said: “Nigel has done great and he’s changed quite a lot.

“It’s a happier place and things are much more upbeat. We’re enjoying ourselves in training even though we’re working really hard.

“There’s a lot more togetherness, including out there on the pitch, as well.”

“I’m not saying it wasn’t a happy place before,” Porter added. “But obviously results change everything, especially in terms of the mood. The methods Nigel uses have certainly done the trick.”

Despite entering their meeting with Sean Derry’s side having taken 16 points from 11 games under Clough’s tutelage, United remain just three places above the relegation zone as a miserable sequences of results at the start of the season continue to influence their position in the table.

Porter, who again is set to partner .....Jose Baxter in attack, said: “We’re starting to show glimpses of what we can do. We did that at Villa Park and long may it continue but we’re aware it’s going to be a complete contrast at County.

“The surface won’t be as great and there might not be as much football played but we’re going to scrap just as hard.”
