New Sheffield United signing Reece Brown was last night told he has joined a dressing room “One hundred per cent” committed to securing promotion.

The former Bury defender yesterday signed a short-term contract at Bramall Lane after impressing on trial and could make his debut against Scunthorpe this afternoon..

Jake Wright, one of 13 players recruited by manager Chris Wilder following his appointment in May, said: “You need good team spirit, that togetherness, and a respect for each other. To look each other in the eye and know you have given everything in training.

“We have got that here. There’s nobody here not giving 100 per cent, and that’s why we have started really well. There’s no hiding place in the dressing room, the lads know when you are not giving 100 per cent.”

United travel to the League One leaders searching for their fifth straight win in the competition after beating Oxford, Gillingham, AFC Wimbledon and Peterborough en route to Glanford Park. Brown, whose future will be reviewed in January, was praised by Wilder during his pre-match press conference for showing “a really good attitude” since being invited to train with his squad. Another trialist, winger Cameron Stewart, is also hoping to secure a deal with United after leaving Ipswich Town.

“He (Brown) comes in and gives us cover at right back or right wing-back,” Wilder said. “He adds weight to our squad and knows the division well. He has done everything we have asked of him. His pedigree is good and this is an opportunity to earn a longer deal.”

Brown, aged 24, started turned professional with Manchester United before representing a number of clubs, including Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers and Oldham Athletic, on loan. He joined Watford in 2013 and arrived at Gigg Lane last year following a short spell with United’s neighbours Barnsley. Brown made 35 appearances for Bury last term.

Wilder, whose side are sixth in the table, wants his latest acquisition to compete with Kieron Freeman for a place in United’s new look rearguard.

Wright said: “If you are going to have a successful season, you need to make sure everyone is doing well. The lads who aren’t making the 18 need to train well to push the 18 on, the 18 pushing the 11 on, and the lads coming off the bench. You need to do that every week in training.

“If you are not training well, and pushing the lads, it doesn’t help them when it comes to games and it doesn’t help you either.”
