Billy Sharp has insisted he could “never” join Sheffield Wednesday despite twice being offered a move to Hillsborough, writes James Shield.

Sharp made the admission after revealing that firing Sheffield United into the Championship would be the sweetest moment of his career after completing an emotional return to Bramall Lane last month.

Sharp, a boyhood United supporter, was first linked with Wednesday eight seasons ago before being courted by Brian Laws’ predecessor Dave Jones in 2013.

But he said: “People might have thought I was going to end up at Wednesday. But it was never going to happen.

“I went to speak to Brian as a courtesy because of my time with him (at Scunthorpe) before. I thought I was going to Wolves anyway. Then, Sheffield United came in and that was that.

“I had the opportunity twice, in fact. But no, I couldn’t have done it.”

Sharp is preparing to embark upon his third spell with United following a £500,000 transfer from Leeds.

The 29-year-old, previously of Southampton and Scunthorpe, added: “I’ve got promotions before but definitely, if I could do it here, that would be the sweetest.

“I’m not going to lie and say that’s not what we’re looking to do. It is and we are.

“This club needs to be in the Premier league, let along the Championship, but it’s one step at a time and I’m not even thinking about that because the season hasn’t even started.

“I’m staying focused and knuckling down. We’ve got to take things one step at a time.

“There will be good and bad times this season but, when they’re bad, we need to make sure we’re still picking up points.

“I’ve only been back here a week but there’s youth, experience and people with promotions. We’ve got a great mix and we want to blend that together and be as one.”
