Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has confirmed Britt Assombalonga and Nicky Ajose will start tonight’s game against Sheffield United despite Conor Washington’s arrival at London Road.
Washington, who scored seven goals in 32 outings for Newport County this term, commanded an undisclosed six figure sum when he left the Welsh club yesterday.
Ferguson, who tried to sign Stefan Scougall before the former Livingston midfielder opted for Bramall Lane instead, is expected to include Washington in the squad which visits South Yorkshire for a fixture set to influence events at both ends of the League One table.
But with Assombalonga and Ajose scoring a combined total of nine goals in Peterborough’s last three outings, Ferguson said: “Conor has good pace and he will play off the shoulder of the last defender. He will be involved at Sheffield United but he won’t start as my two strikers, Britt and Nicky, are in great form and scoring goals.”
Washington, aged 21, was handed a trial by Peterborough after impressing with their non-league neighbours St Ives Town before helping County achieve promotion from the Conference last season.
Ferguson, who is without suspended forward Lee Tomlin for the meeting with Nigel Clough’s relegation threatened side, believes his latest acquisition is now possesses the skills required to enhance his team’s promotion credentials.
Peterborough allowed Shaun Jeffers to move in the opposite direction as they looked to accelerate negotiations with officials at Rodney Parade.
“I like Conor. I know we had him in the building before, but he wasn’t ready then,” Ferguson said. “He ticks all the boxes for me.
“He’s young, he’s hungry and he was interested in progressing his career than he was in money. Conor now comes to us as an established footballer.”
