Sheffield United ponder Britton-Ertl partnership

SHEFFIELD United take a step up in their pre-season preparations when they take on Notts County at Meadow Lane tonight (7.45).

The Blades hierarchy will also be looking for a step up from their players too as they face the newly-promoted League One side to be followed on Sunday by the visit of Alex Sabella's Estudiantes to Bramall Lane.

"It was certainly a good workout against Rotherham but I don't think anyone was impressive although we are getting better which is the object of the exercise," said assistant manager Sam Ellis.

"You can always do things better but these games have got to be competitive, that's what happened against Rotherham and we'll get that at Notts County, and it gets you ready for the new season."

It could be that Leon Britton gets a starting place tonight.

The new signing from Swansea returned after injury on Saturday and played for the final half-hour.

With managers always likely to look at different partnerships, boss Kevin Blackwell may decide to pair him with Jonny Ertl. He is someone who can play in a good few positions and that was the idea of bringing him here," said Ellis of Ertl.

"He's a good solid pro in three or four positions. We've seen him in defence and now taken a look at him in midfield.

"He will have to adapt to our needs and hopefully we'll find out where his best position is going to be most effective."

Ched Evans, who turned his ankle last week. will get part of the game if he has recovered.

Darius Henderson will remain sidelined, at least until the weekend,

The Blades will combine their Open Day with Sunday's visit of South American champions Estudiantes and there is a Veterans match within the day's events as well.
