Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins has warned Portsmouth that Marc McNulty could be recalled to Bramall Lane next month.

Dismissing claims that an agreement has already been reached which will see the centre-forward remain at Fratton Park until the end of the season, Adkins instead confirmed the matter is scheduled to be “reviewed” before the transfer window reopens in 30 days time.

“Listen, there are a lot of things that are going to get reviewed in January,” Adkins told The Star. “Here and at most other football clubs too. But the most important thing in the meantime is to focus on the players we’ve got and the next game coming-up.

“Sparky has done really well. He scored a hat-trick recently which is great. I’ve told everyone, I’ve not sold him, I just want him to play games which he wasn’t doing here.”

McNulty has claimed four goals in five outings since being allowed to join Paul Cook’s side but United recently scotched suggestions they plan to offload the 23-year-old.

“I’ve got to do the right thing by the player and also by the football club,” Adkins said. “I just want him to get some football under his belt which he’s doing.

“But, great, I want him scoring. I want Michael Higdon scoring for Oldham on loan, I want Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring for Northampton. I want them all to do well because that’s the whole idea.”
