SHEFFIELD United academy director John Pemberton has declined an invitation to succeed Sean O’Driscoll at Crawley Town, writes James Shield.

Pemberton, who was granted permission to speak to the League One club on Tuesday evening, informed its director of football Steve Coppell of his decision late last night.

The Star understands that “footballing reasons” prompted the former United and Crystal Palace defender to remain at Bramall Lane.

Having handed Coppell the task of filling the vacancy created by O’Driscoll’s shock appointment at Nottingham Forest, Town must now move quickly or risk starting the new campaign without a permanent manager at the helm.

Pemberton guided United to the final of the 2011 FA Youth Cup.

Several members of that team, including Matthew Harriott and Joe Ironside, are hoping to join fellow academy graduate Harry Maguire in Danny Wilson’s senior squad next term.
