Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins has warned quitters will not be tolerated as he stamps his authority on Bramall Lane, writes James Shield.

The former Scunthorpe chief, who led Southampton from the third tier to the Premier League three years ago, was speaking after putting United’s first team squad through its paces during a gruelling 48 hour training camp in Leicestershire.

“First and foremost you need grit,” he said. “If you want to be successful, if you want to achieve anything, then that’s what you’ve got to show.

“And grit is passion and perseverance. If you don’t demonstrate those qualities, then your ability won’t shine through.

“If we want to get to where we want to be, if we want to achieve our targets, then everybody connected with this club has got to have that attitude and steel.”

United were beaten in the play-off semi-finals last season and Adkins, who took charge soon after that defeat, added: “You need to fail to achieve too. Because you learn from it.

“There are no givens because we know what a tough division this is. It’s a long, hard grind.

“But everyone is focused now. We’re off our holidays and it’s back to work.”
