Nigel Adkins has revealed Sheffield United are ready to pursue their leading transfer targets until the final minutes of the transfer window after confirming that Martyn Woolford will not be the only new arrival at Bramall Lane this summer, writes James Shield.

But Adkins, who is pressing ahead with his bid to sign Leeds centre-forward Billy Sharp, rubbished claims last season’s League One play-off semi-finalists need wholesale changes in order to win promotion next term.

“Everybody knows, as talks progress, things come to fruition,” he told The Star. “A lot of things happened just before the transfer deadline too.

“Unfortunately, that doesn’t close until after the season starts. We don’t want to be in that position, ideally. But we’ll see.”

Although Adkins refused to identify his list of targets, United are known to have included Sharp on their wanted-list after appointing the 50-year-old as manager six weeks ago. Woolford, previously of Millwall and Scunthorpe, agreed a two year contract on Tuesday morning.

“From my point of view, we don’t need numbers,” Adkins said. “We’ve got people with good attitudes here and good ability.

“That has impressed us. If the right opportunity arises to improve the group, though, then we’ll do it.

“We have ideas and we know the areas we are looking at.”
