Nigel Clough has warned Sheffield United’s promotion rivals that Matt Done is yet to reach the peak of his powers, writes James Shield.

The centre-forward, who moved to Bramall Lane from Rochdale earlier this month, returns to Spotland tonight after scoring four goals in as many outings for the Championship hopefuls.

But, insisting the 26-year-old has so far only shown glimpses of his potential, Clough said: “We’ve not seen the best of Matty yet. There is still plenty more to come from him and he’ll only keep on becoming a better player.

“That’s because, despite his record, Matty is still learning the position. Don’t forget, he’s not been a striker for that long.”

Done, who represented Wrexham, Barnsley and Hibernian before rejoining Keith Hill’s side in 2013, has hit the target 18 times since the start of the season after being switched from the flanks.

Clough, whose team are fifth in the table following last weekend’s draw with Coventry City, added: “Matty is a real nuisance for defenders and never gives up on a cross. That’s why we’re starting to put those away on a more regular basis now.

“Ideally, we’d have got him in the summer but we had to be patient because there aren’t too many people like Matty around who become available.”

United, who will be without the suspended Jose Baxter after confirming they will not appeal his 16th minute red card against the visitors from Warwickshire, will hand a late fitness test to Ryan Flynn while Jason Holt could also declare himself available for selection after being forced to miss the meeting with City due to injury.

Clough paid an undisclosed sum to acquire Done’s services and said: “You always hope that a new player, especially a centre-forward, will get off to a good start and Matty has. But it doesn’t really surprise us too much.

“We knew he’d score goals because he gets into the six yard box. It was obvious from the first moment we began watching him and it’s a real trait of his.”
