Sheffield United are expected to recall George Long for this weekend’s FA Cup tie with Worcester City.
The former England youth international made his last senior appearance against Notts County four weeks ago but, according to Nigel Adkins, is challenging fellow goalkeeper Mark Howard for a starting role.
Indicating Long could retain his place when United return to League One action against Southend on November 14 if he impresses against the visitors from Aggborough during the JP Trophy tie at Fleetwood three days later.
“We have the utmost confidence in George,” Adkins said. “We’ve played him already in the cup games and there are another two coming-up so it may well be that there’s an opportunity there.”
Adkins selected Long for his first game in charge of United on the opening day of the present campaign but recalled Howard following a 4-0 defeat by Gillingham.
“We rate George very highly,” Adkins said. “We’ve made that clear all the way through and we made that clear in the first game. It was a shame howe it unfolded but the fact we played him and have done since tells you what you need to know.”
