Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins has leapt to Che Adams’ defence, refuting claims the youngster is gaining a reputation for simulation.

Adams received his second caution of the season during last weekend’s League One fixture at Crewe Alexandra after referee Fred Graham ruled he had dived in a vain attempt to win a penalty kick.

The England under-20 international was booked for the same offence during September’s South Yorkshire derby against Doncaster Rovers at Bramall Lane.

But Adkins told The Star: “Che hasn’t dived. There was a definite clip there. I know because I’ve seen the video of the (Crewe) incident. It’s one of those things that happens, the ref wasn’t too far away from what happened but he has to make a split second judgement. I’ve had the benefit of watching it back again and he’s not just gone down because there definitely was contact there.”

Adkins, explaining why he had not made more of Graham’s decision at the time, added: “I can’t come out and winge about the referee because we’ve had more than enough opportunities to win the game ourselves. Equally, we had enough bodies around the ball for their goal to clear it. We won’t hide away.”

United host Worcester City, of the National League North, in the FA Cup on Saturday before visiting Fleetwood Town for a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie at Highbury next week.

Confirming that, in tandem with Bramall Lane’s fitness and medical department, he plans to implement measures aimed at improving United’s injury record, the 50-year-old said: “We’ve been too fragmented with injuries. I’ve got to find a way of making sure we are much more consistent with regards to selection.”
