Kieron Freeman is expected to join Sheffield United on loan next season, after sources at Derby County revealed talks over the defender’s future have focused on a temporary rather than permanent deal, writes James Shield.

Although the exact terms of the proposed agreement brokered by officials at Bramall Lane and the iPro Stadium could still be changed, The Star understands negotiations aimed at allowing Freeman to spend the 2014/15 in South Yorkshire are now at an advanced stage.

The Wales under-21 international, who has also been capped at under-19 level, made 12 appearances for Nigel Clough’s side after arriving at United in March and was a member of the squad which overcame a wretched start to eventually secure a seventh placed finish and become the first League One team to reach the FA Cup semi-finals since 2001.

Freeman, who moved to Derby from Nottingham Forest during Clough’s reign in the east Midlands, has also represented Mansfield Town and Notts County after progressing through the ranks at the City Ground four years ago.
