Nigel Clough is convinced Harrison McGahey can emulate Harry Maguire and become one of England’s best young defenders, writes James Shield.

McGahey has started three of Sheffield United’s four outings so far this season after seizing his chance following the former England under-21 international’s £2.5m transfer to Premier League outfit Hull City.

And Clough, who signed the 18-year-old from Blackpool earlier this summer, revealed coach Chris Morgan shares his belief in McGahey’s potential.

“We’re delighted with Harrison and there are definitely lots of similarities between him and Harry,” Clough, the United manager said. “He’s adapted really well and Morgs reckons he’s probably a little bit ahead of where Harry was at the same stage of his career.

“Having someone like Morgs around, who’s played that position, will be great for Harrison. Morgs isn’t a mentor as such but he was the type of centre-half we’d love all of our ones to be.”

Clough, speaking ahead of today’s game against Crawley Town, added: “Young players always make mistakes but if you don’t play them then they don’t learn. And so long as they don’t keep making the same ones then everything is fine.

“Physically, Harrison is absolutely okay. You can see that.

“It’s just the mental side of playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday that he’s got to get to grips with now. But he’ll do that because, despite the pressure on his shoulders, the responsibility of being at a club like this, he’s shown great maturity.”
