One of Nigel Adkins’ former players and a League One promotion rival for next season, has hailed the new Sheffield United boss as ‘one of the best managers I have worked under’.

Grant McCann, currently a coach at Peterborough, was signed by Adkins, then in charge of Scunthorpe, from Barnsley in 2008 and the pair enjoyed play off success that season , jumping from League One to the Championship.

The former Northern Ireland international is delighted to see his old boss back in a managerial post and is hoping to see his Posh side going head-to-head with the Blades for promotion.

The midfielder praised United for appointing Adkins and described the 50 year old, who was officially unveiled in London on Tuesday, as the ‘perfect’ man to help get United out of the division.

“Nigel (Adkins) is probably one of the best managers I have ever worked under,” said McCann, who began his career at West Ham before spells at Cheltenham, Barnsley, Scunthorpe and Peterborough.

“It’s a fantastic appointment by Sheffield United, he’s perfect for them and I’m really glad to see Nigel back in management again.”

McCann added: “I just loved the way he was with me and the rest of the team we had at Scunthorpe.

“He knows how to get the best out of players.

“We had a good team there - players like Gary Hooper, Paul Hayes - but he really dragged everything out of all of us; he made everyone perform to their very best.

“He got us up and kept us there for another season, too, which was a great achievement for a club like Scunthorpe.”

Blades striker Marc McNulty tweeted, after the announcement, that he was ‘looking forward to working with the new manager,’ and McCann says all of the Scots’ team mates should be feeling the same way.

“Sheffield United players will really like working with him,” he said.

“They will like the way he is on the training pitch, the way he goes about things away from matches on a day-to-day basis...he is just great to work with.

“His man-management is brilliant.”

McCann is now looking forward to pushing United for one of the promotion places next season.

“They (United) are going to be favourites now, if they weren’t already, but hopefully we will be up there, too. It’s going to be another big battle up at the top again.”
