Florent Cuvelier has entered the final stage of his battle against injury, Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins confirmed this afternoon.

The former Belgium under-21 international will miss Saturday’s game against his former club Walsall after being plagued by fitness problems this term. But Adkins, who told The Star that Cuvelier has the “talent” to help consolidate United’s promotion credentials, said: “Flo has had two weeks of training now and that’s great. That’s great because he’s a very talented footballer and a very nice guy.

“It’s been really unfortunate for Flo but hopefully he’s getting there now.”

“All the players here have ability and talent we’d like to think,” Adkins added. “That’s why they are here in the first place. But there are good characters too and, from what we’ve seen, Flo is one of those.”

Cuvelier has not made a first team appearance for United since December. The midfielder moved to Bramall Lane after impressing during a spell on loan at the Banks’s Stadium having enjoyed limited opportunities with his parent club Stoke City.

Adkins, who earlier today allowed Terry Kennedy to join Cambridge United until January, said: “The most important thing, from our perspective and also from Flo’s, is that he is moving in the right direction now.”
