Ryan Flynn last night admitted this afternoon’s FA Cup clash against Plymouth Argyle has assumed even greater importance as Sheffield United attempt to arrest their disappointing run of results at Bramall Lane, writes James Shield.

But Flynn, speaking ahead of the second round tie, warned that Nigel Clough’s side are ready to take out their League One frustrations on the visitors from Devon following Tuesday’s defeat by MK Dons.

That result left United without a win on home soil since November 18 but, leaping to the defence of his team mates, the former Falkirk winger told The Star: “It’s important that we get back to winning ways, especially in front of our own fans, as quickly as possible and that means straight away.

“Ever since the gaffer came in, whatever the competition, we are looking to go as far as we can. There’s no giving priority to any game in particular, that’s not what he’s about.

“We like that. We want to win every game because I don’t think you can just turn it on and off.”

United, who face Southampton in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals later this month, reached the semi-finals of the tournament last term.

“Then, when games were thick and fast, we were at our best,” Flynn added. “Last year we went on a 10 or 11 game winning streak and went flying up the league table.

“Winning games become second nature and we have not found that yet this season. But we didn’t deserve to lose against MK Dons because we were the better team.

“We want to keep dominating games but with a different result. It’s just the final ball and first goal.

“The earlier you get that, the easier the game becomes as it takes a little bit of belief away from opponents and means their game plan goes out of the window.

“But we’ve not got what we’ve deserved lately. We’ve had more possession and created more opportunities than the opposition in all of those games.

“So there’s no panic here from us. Just a determination to make sure we get back to winning ways.

“Teams are coming here again and looking to be hard to break down. It was only last season, to begin with anyway, when they were coming here with belief.

“They’re looking to get men behind the ball now and to pinch something. So we’ve got to break them down but we’ve done it before and we can do it again.

“That’s why, because we’ve been playing well, there’s no panicking here among the lads.”
