Sheffield United will host Oldham Athletic in the second round of the FA Cup next month.
David Dunn’s side secured their visit to Bramall Lane after winning tonight’s first round replay against Mansfield Town at Boundary Park.
Danny Philliskirk and Dominic Poleon were both on target during the second-half of a match played in atrocious conditions in front of a sparse crowd.
Michael Higdon, who joined Athletic on loan last month, started for the hosts alongside former United players Philliskirk, Mark Yeates and Poleon while Adam Chapman, a graduate of the club’s youth academy, featured for Mansfield.
Only the width of the crossbar prevented Yeates from breaking the deadlock early in the second-half when he stepped-up to take a 25 yard free-kick before Philliskirk and Richard Eckersley both saw efforts cleared off the line.
Mansfield continued to compete well but the pressure eventually told when Philliskirk found himself unmarked inside the penalty area and duly converted. Poleon put the game beyond Mansfield’s reach soon after.
Meanwhile, United have confirmed that Kieran Wallace has signed a new contract after impressing manager Nigel Adkins. The Star recently revealed that Wallace, who arrived from Ilkeston last term, was set to be offered an improved deal and, this afternoon, the League One club obliged by tieing him to Bramall Lane until the summer of 2018. “We are very pleased to have extended Kieran’s contract and we hope it will give him more stability moving forward,” Adkins told United’s official website. “Since the day we joined, his attitude, behaviour and commitment has been first class and he is improving as a player all the time.
“He has certainly done very well this season and we believe he is in an environment with the right people round him to develop further. Now he has more security we are confident he will continue on that upward development curve.”
