Starlet Diego De Girolamo notched a hat-trick as Chris Morgan’s young Sheffield United U21 side beat Brentford 4-1 at the Redtooth Academy this afternoon.
In front of the watching United manager Nigel Clough, De Girolamo pounced three times in the second half after Charlie Adams had spectacularly cancelled out Ben Whiteman’s opener for United.
United’s young side, containing the likes of Iain Turner, Connor Dimaio and Otis Khan, started brightly and took the lead when Whiteman scored directly from a corner, with goalkeeper Nik Tzanev struggling.
But Brentford equalised in the second half, when Adams cut in from the left and beat Turner with a well-placed left-footed shot.
De Girolamo restored United’s advantage when he converted Jason Paling’s inviting cross, and made it three when he took advantage of a mix-up between Tzanev and centre-half Kieran Morris.
And the Italian youth international sealed his hat-trick from close range, after Tzanev had parried away a shot from the lively CJ Hamilton.
