Nigel Clough last night indicated that Sheffield United are close to renewing Conor Coady’s loan from Liverpool after watching him score the only goal at Priestfield Stadium.
United manager Clough also outlined his reasons for signing Ben Davies following last night’s victory at Gillingham.
Clough’s revelation about Coady will come as a boost for the player who has made no secret of his desire to finish the season at Bramall Lane.
The midfielder, who captained England at last summer’s FIFA under-20 World Cup, has made 31 appearances since joining United. “I think we are just about there in terms of keeping Conor until the end of the season,” Clough said.
“He’s young, improving and we think this is the perfect place for him.”
Davies, meanwhile, joined Clough’s squad on loan from Derby County hours before a win which lifted the visitors to 18th in the League One table.
“Ben is an excellent professional,” Clough said. “He’s experienced and someone we know well which means we won’t have to spend weeks getting him up to speed.
“He can operate in a variety of different positions and his dead ball delivery is as good as anything in the division.”
Davies, aged 32, is scheduled to spend the rest of the season at Bramall Lane after ressurecting his partnership with Clough.
The two worked together at the iPro Stadium.
United opened talks with Derby aimed at securing Davies’ release earlier this week but several factors prevented an agreement from being reached until yesterday.
