Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, has refused to withdraw his interest in John Brayford despite Cardiff City’s refusal to entertain the possibility of allowing the defender to leave Wales.
Brayford, who has previously worked with Clough at Burton Albion and Derby County, became a cult-hero at Bramall Lane after moving to South Yorkshire on loan last season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Clough’s City counterpart, has repeatedly insisted the 26-year-old remains part of his plans next term.
However, speaking at the Redtooth Academy yesterday, Clough has clearly not given-up hope of luring him back to United.
“We are just waiting to see,” Clough said. “If Ole decides that he wants to keep John then there’s nothing we can do.
“We should get a better idea closer to the start of the season but, as we’ve made clear all along, John is someone we’d love to work with again if the possibility is there.”
