Harrison McGahey will reap the benefits of his spell on loan with Tranmere Rovers, Nigel Clough insisted last night.

The Sheffield United manager sanctioned McGahey’s move to Prenton Park after issuing assurances about the teenager’s long-term future at Bramall Lane, despite failing to command a regular position in the League One club’s starting eleven of late.

Clough told The Star: “We always made it clear that Harrison is one for the future as far as we are concerned and that has not changed whatsoever.

“He made a terrific start to his career here with us and got more games than probably any of us expected at that stage. But with Jay (McEveley), Bash (Chris Basham) and Terry Kennedy all doing so well recently, he’s not been able to get on the pitch as much as he or we would like in recent weeks.

“A spell in League Two will do Harrison the power of good. He’ll come back to us an even better player for that experience.”

McGahey, aged 19, had made only four senior appearances when he joined United from Blackpool during the close season. Having accumulated a further 22 since, the centre-half will spend the rest of the campaign with Rovers and could make his debut at York City today.

“Harrison is a versatile right sided defender,” Clough’s predecessor and counterpart, said. “And we look forward to having him here with us at the football club.”
