Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, has placed his concerns about Darren Bond’s performance during Thursday evening’s League One play-off semi-final first-leg on record, writes James Shield.

Clough revealed he expressed reservations about “four key decisions” made by the referee to David Allison, of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, before his squad began preparing for Monday’s return at Swindon Town.

“We spoke to him, the ref, after the game,” Clough said last night. “But we found his explanations very difficult to fathom.

“All we can do is mark him accordingly. We spoke to David Allison, the head of referees, this morning to put on record our disappointment.”

Clough was bitterly upset that Jamie Murphy had two penalty appeals waved away by Bond during the 2-1 defeat before Matt Done was later denied an advantage after earlier seeing a goal disallowed.

Meanwhile, Clough has confirmed Stefan Scougall’s “season is over”, regardless of next week’s result, due to a hamstring injury.
